To illustrate how very poor both the AdSense context targeting engine is and Google's leadership, years ago I wrote to Google complaining that they were running "Fear of Flying" ads on my Airline News site - mostly near accident stories - mostly - not always.
Now I'll grant you that there may be a very few people afraid to fly following a SERP to a story on that site.
But over 98% of the readership loves to fly - a big percentage are pilots.
At first, of course, I RTDs and blocked the domains of the ads.
It got waaaaay outta control.
So I wrote to AdSense "support" - talk about misleading labels.
I informed them that I wished them to block "fear of flying" (and related) keyword driven impressions.
AdSense Support told me it was impossible. I said flag the whole domain. "That is impossible," the Google Kool-Aid-drinking drone replied. Note: They said keyword blocking was not possible, not the fictional quote shown here for entertainment purposes.
"No, not impossible," said I. You (Google leadership) have decided not to do it. That does not make it impossible to do.
This is money coming out of my pocket and Google's since the CTR will be in the toilet.
The very first time I raised the issue I was falsely told it was resolved (this issue number and quote below are real):
[#45519938] 2/3/06
Hello,
Thanks for your email. We've resolved the issue with Google ad targeting
on http://www.aerospacenews.com/ . We appreciate your patience as we
investigated your case. If this issue reoccurs, please let us know.
Sincerely,
David
The Google AdSense Team
So it went back and forth and back and forth and... well, it was G's "support" after all.
To this day those robotic bureaucrats have still failed to grasp this simple issue or resolve it.
As an aside, I wonder what the AdSense on this page will keyword hit on?
