Google's AdSense unit rolled out a wider beta invitation of the Ad Review Center. Apparently we qualified and took it for a spin.
While a big step up from zero in-account ad review capabilities, the execution, as is common with Google and especially the AdSense and AdWords departments, fails in several key areas.
AdSense allows you to have as many domains under your master account as you wish, as long as they all comply with the TOS. In fact, except under special circumstances, it is required.
We have more than one domain running AdSense.
As you might expect, I looked for a means to display the ads targeted by placement to our specific domains filtered by domain. In other words, all ads for domain 1 in a group, all ads for domain 2, etc.
No such luck.
Not only is there zero by domain filtering for Ad Review, the ads that are displayed have absolutely no tagging or other indication for which of your domains the ads are to run on!
It boggles the mind that Google would mess that up, but this is the AdSense unit we are talking about.
Why is this a problem?
Say you have two websites. One is about cats. The other about women's health.
Now there will likely be a large number of women visiting both.
In your AdSense Ad Review Center you see ads for women's shoes. But where are they running?
All things being equal, since the value to you as a publisher, and to the advertiser, is greatest on ads that enjoy a high CTR (Click Through Rate), you want to focus on allowing ads that match the interest of your audience most closely.
You may wish to allow the shoe ads on both websites, or say, just the women's health site, since it is gender-focused, allowing only the cat-related products and services to appear on your feline forum. But without knowing which domain the ad is targeted to (or seeing the ads display while viewing your site), this is a choice you simply are prevented from making.
