YouTube Sends 30,000 Japanese Clips Down Drain |
|
|
YouTube, the new $1.65 billion Google property, has dumped 30,000 videos after complaints from a Japanese industry trade group.
The service allows users to upload video for sharing on the site and posting, without needing to host the actual files, on websites, blogs and MySpace.
Apparently the Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers complained that 29,549 clips were copyrighted and their presence on YouTube infringed on those rights.
YouTube does require users to agree to terms and conditions forbidding infringement and repeats this demand during the upload process. However, a casual review of YouTube content and this case makes it clear these obligations are ignored by tens of thousands of users.
