Chitika Code Tips
To make the most out of your Chitika ads, be sure to optimize the placement of the ads, the selection of the keywords (if not running in contextual mode), the colors, and tweak the code as indicated below.
For a sense of placement, follow the common sense standards for advertising or reference Google's hotspot maps.
For keyword selection, think about your audience! What do they buy now? What will they be buying this season (are they parents with kids wanting the hottest thing)? What are they likely to buy if you suggest it to them (books, an iPod, cell phone, DVD, music, etc.)? The closer you get to their "wants" the more likely they are to click on the ad.
Which keywords to actually use? Take your list of items from the brainstorming you did to answer the questions above and go to Amazon.com :
Search for the actual product names. Write those down or copy them into a file.
In your Chitika code, following the syntax of the default code very carefully, add to or replace the default code with the product names you've found. For example, here is the query code we're running on our Air and Space News site:
var ch_queries = new Array("pilot watch", "IL2: Forgotten Battles Gold Pack", "Saitek X52 Flight Control System", "CH Products Flight Sim Yoke USB", "X-Plane 8.0", "Fighter Pilot For Microsoft Flight Simulator", "Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004", "Warcraft", "GPS", "ipod", "XBox", "Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar Flight Control System", "digital cameras", "Lock On: Modern Air Combat", "sony playstation", "dell laptop", "Falcon 4.0: Allied Force", "Miracle Beam Laser Pet Toy", "ibook", "Wings Over Vietnam", "F/A 18 Operation Iraqi Freedom", "Battle of Britain 2: Shockwave", "power mac", "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller", "XBox 360 Call of Duty 2", "XBox 360 Quake 4", "Nintendo DS", "Tomtom GO 700 GPS Receiver" );
That produces the results you see below:
As far as the colors go - either do your best to make your ad blend in and match the "look" of your site (as is recommended with AdSense), or work to make them really stand out. We use the blend in approach.
The last tweak is to alter the code so that the "default" tab always displays as "Best Deals."
In your code, you just put this:
ch_default_tab = 'Best Deals';
right after this:
ch_non_contextual = 1;
NOTE: Do NOT leave out the ";" at the end.
There you go - you are all set to starting making some serious money!
