Google Gmail Spam - Google Refuses Spamcop Reports Print
To: abuse@ google.com (refuses to accept this type of report)
To: abuse#google.com@ devnull.spamcop.net (Notes)

That's right, the "Don't Be Evil" Google hypocrite won't accept spam reports from Spamcop. I'd heard this before but when I went to LART a spamming scumbag this morning, I saw the above in the details after Spamcop finished parsing the spam.

What could possibly motivate Google to adopt this unhelpful policy? Perhaps this is tit for tat? Spamcop has blocked Gmail servers in the past for sending spam and failing to disclose the sender's IP. Note please, Gmail was the source of spam.

I've sent the following e-mail to abuse @ gmail.com (23 January 2008 in the AM) -

Both the subject and body say: Question: Why Don't You Accept Spamcop Reports?

I've only been sent an auto ack so far (see below). As of 6 September 2008 at 2:00 AM, Google Abuse has failed to respond.

Spamcop is hated by spammers and widely adopted and appreciated by ethical hosting companies and ISPs. A very few lowlife service providers refuse munged reports, but an even shorter list of quality companies refuse all reports as Google seems to do. If memory serves, normally when I see a refusal notation of "all reports," it is from a pro-spam sleaze in some spam haven foreign country.

Nice company Gmail and Google appear to be keeping.

One fellow publisher often complains to me about how many Gmail e-mail addresses he sees from forum spammers. I too am very close to banning all Gmail.com addresses from use on forums I host. I've done that to Yahoo.co.uk due to the same issue.

That publisher tells me in an e-mail that there once was a Gmail form to report spam directly at this url (URI):

https://services. google.com/inquiry/gmail_security4
(broken to not link to Google)

It looks like it was once there because it now redirects to this url:

http://mail. google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=abuse_other
(broken to not link to Google)

Which features this unhelpful, finger-in-your-eye text (how typical and arrogant of Google):

Help Center Google Help > Gmail Help > Contact Us

Contact Us

We love to hear from our users, so let us know how we can improve Gmail or how we can help you. We're sorry that we can't respond to every message, but know that we are working hard and using your feedback to make Gmail even better.

There is no form to submit at that address - no means to "let Google hear from its users." Just that vapid and inaccurate text.

In the auto ack to my question the following text was included:

"WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU REPORT ABUSE?

Your email has been provided to the Gmail Abuse team. Any additional information that you provide through the forms in the Gmail Security Center will be added to your original message, and will help us to more efficiently process your request." (emphasis added)

Recall there was no form at the link I referred to above. There is quality control Google-style for you.

Here is a partial list of Gmail - Googlemail spammer accounts - in reverse order - anybody see a pattern here?:

paul paul paulnkuneeee7@gmail.com (9 May 2008 from hu-out-0506.google.com IP 72.14.214.238 - This one was a 419 scam FRAUD e-mail sent from gmail.com - nice Google - well done - allowing this surely is not evil, is it?) And this is telling: ISP does not wish to receive reports regarding paulnkuneeee7 - no date available paulnkuneeee7 has been appealed previously - that is a paraphrase - NOT exact quote - of the spamcop status message displayed when trying to bring this to Google's attention.
sghsfjgdhjsfjfgh@gmail.com (7 May 2008 from cosmostv.com IP 87.252.227.57 - in all fairness to Google this one looks like it was never a real address or Gmail account they allowed to be opened, just a random string @gmail.com)

This one above is interesting in that it was a classic 419 fraud scam e-mail with a Yahoo reply drop box ( kevinmosala@yahoo.com ), but it clearly was sent from the Google server. It was sent in a blind CC bulk mail directed to another gmail account - msnser2@gmail.com - but here is what is most interesting: For the first time I can recall - when reported via spamcop - abuse@google.com "seemed" to accept the report.

More to come - out of time.

As I've said elsewhere on this website, it is clear that Google is creating a significant part of the spam problem they claim they are trying to stop. They are also failing to take reasonable steps to allow notification of abuse by their clients. Removal of that reporting link and refusal of Spamcop reports are two concrete examples.

Matt Cutts, what say you sir?
